What Central Park’s $35.7 Million Water Project Does

Central Park’s new water project addresses two problems: using drinking water to replenish park waterways, and sending too much water into sewers during heavy rain.

The new system will recirculate water through the Pool, the Loch and the Harlem Meer in northern Central Park.

That means reusing more water inside the park while reducing pressure on the sewer system serving surrounding neighborhoods.

Officials estimate it could save 175 million gallons of drinking water each year and divert 132 million gallons from local sewers.

Completion is expected in fall 2028.

It’s the kind of neighborhood improvement you may barely notice—until a heavy storm reminds you why it matters.
