On October 21, 1959, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum opened its doors on Fifth Avenue. More than six decades later, the building remains one of the city’s defining architectural experiences.

Architect Frank Lloyd Wright rejected the familiar sequence of boxlike gallery rooms in favor of a continuous spiral wrapped around an open center.

Wright died before the museum opened. His design challenged expectations about how art should be displayed, viewed and encountered within a building.

Pay attention to the experience of moving through the space. The ramp, curving walls and central void continually change visitors’ sightlines and their relationship to the art.

The museum stands at 1071 Fifth Avenue between East 88th and East 89th Streets, across from Central Park. Confirm current exhibitions, tickets and opening hours before visiting.
